Textile recycling in Uzice and Niksic

Project “Textile recycling to sustainable solutions”, which was prepared by Women Center from Uzice and SOS Hotline for Women and Children Victims of Violence from Niksic, started on 11th April 2014.

Project was prepared within the Second Call for Proposals of the Cross-border Cooperation Programme Serbia-Montenegro, while the information on is approval was received in January 2014. Project had been approved from the so-called “reserve list”. Total project costs 170,000 euros and funds will be directed towards establishing infrastructural and personnel preconditions for improving the employment of vulnerable populations in two cities, primarily women. This aim will be achieved by creating systems of collecting, processing and distributing recycled textile. It is necessary to implement some steps. First step is infrastructural equipping of the two centers for the reception of textile in Uzice and Niksic. These centers should receive textile donated from citizens, conduct secondary selection and classification of materials. The next step are creative workshops, with the aim of employing their members. Third step will be creation of conditions for continuously education of persons who are interested in production of items made of recycled textile. Next step is defining structure of products, made of recycled textile, which will be produced and sold on market by the associations. Final phase is raising the awareness of local communities on the opportunities of recycle and re-use of textile in solving multiple problems of modern society: social, economic and ecological.

Cooperation with national institutions will provide professional selection of candidates and trainings for their additional qualification. Attendants will acquire basic knowledge on textile production, including: textile classification, trainings on sewing tailoring, textile production techniques, safety at work, etc.

Project duration is 15 months and it will be implemented by the two partner organization from Serbia (The Women Center, The National Employment Services - department in Uzice and The Zlatibor Regional Development Agency from Uzice) and Montenegro (The SOS Hotline for Women and Children Victims of Violence association and Labour Bureau from Niksic).
